Eminem, Nicki Minaj Top Billboard's New Social Media Chart

With the popularity of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike.com, it was only a matter of time before someone would use the social media sites to rank an artist’s importance.Billboard did just that, recently releasing their inaugural Social 50 Chart, which lists the most active artists online.
Rihanna and Justin Bieber topped this first chart at No. 1 and No. 2, while Eminem—who just nabbed 10 Grammy nominations—picked up the No. 3 spot. Other hip-hop artists to appear in the top 10 include Young Money Princess Nicki Minaj at No. 5, Lil Wayne at No. 8 and Kanye West at No. 9.
“We continue to adapt the way we chart the changing landscape of music,” Billboard’s editorial director Bill Werde explained in a statement. “The Social 50 is yet another step in the evolution of Billboard and an important response to our changing times.”
The new chart uses information garnered from Next Big Sound, a social music tracking service that takes into account an artists friends, fans and followers on all the leading social networking sites, according to Yahoo News.
“The volume of online activity that top artists now receive is too big to ignore,” Next Big Sound CEO, Alex White said. “We are thrilled that social music activity now receives the same emphasis as the music charts for which Billboard is synonymous.”
Billboard will release The Social 50 Chart on a weekly basis from now on
